Meet Coach James Fields

Coach James Fields grew up in Toledo, Ohio, and moved to Southwest Virginia in sixth grade. He played quarterback at Eastern Montgomery High School, where he threw for more than 3,000 yards and 32 touchdowns and completed 70% of his passes as a senior. He went on to play quarterback at Glenville State College in 2013–2014, where he redshirted his freshman year.

That one season turned out to be his last as a player. Academic challenges and personal circumstances ended his college career, and he often wonders how things might have gone with a quarterback coach who taught the mental side of the game along with mechanics and footwork.

He started coaching quarterbacks around 2016 to give Southwest Virginia athletes the specialized training he saw was missing, so they could compete with quarterbacks across the country. Today he is an outpatient therapist with a Master of Social Work, and he trains quarterbacks in the physical, cognitive, and psychological demands of the position.

How he trains

The whole quarterback

“I don’t die on the hill of mechanics.”Coach Fields

Mechanics and footwork matter, and if something is hurting a quarterback’s play, Coach Fields fixes it. But his main focus is the mental game: how a quarterback processes information, makes decisions, handles adversity, and stays confident under pressure. The goal isn’t only a better throw. It’s a quarterback who thinks better, responds better, and performs more consistently.

Cognitive performance

Processing speed, decision-making, impulse control, working memory, and attention. Quarterbacks learn to see the information, make the right call, and execute with confidence.

Quarterback fundamentals

Throwing mechanics, footwork, defensive recognition, and reading and reacting to defensive structures.

Mental health

Help with the hard parts of the position, like a benching, a transfer, a rough game, lost confidence, or the pressure to meet expectations, drawing on his work as an outpatient therapist.

A session, start to finish

  1. Warm up the body and the brain. Full-body warm-up, stability work, and card games like UNO that test processing speed, attention, memory, and decisions.
  2. Check in. A gratitude prompt, a goal, or something hard from the field or from life, so the mental work starts right away.
  3. Mobility. Stretching for the rotator cuff, lats, and hips, plus hip strength.
  4. Throw. From stationary throws to throws on the run, with footwork, mechanics, and body awareness from the ground up.
  5. Track it. Completions in each drill are recorded so athletes can see their progress.
  6. Finish strong. Every quarterback leaves knowing what improved and what to work on next.
